Let’s follow a day in the life of one of our fleet service technicians—we’ll call him “Mike” because 1 in 3 techs seems to be named Mike anyway.
7:59 AM – The Clock-In Olympics
Mike clocks in at exactly 7:59 a.m. Not 8:00. Never 8:00. That’s rookie behavior. He grabs his schedule, scans the parts list, and mentally prepares for a day that includes everything from replacing an airbag on a semi to removing what may or may not be a squirrel nest from an RV engine bay. Just another Tuesday.
8:15 AM – First Stop: The Diesel Dragon
He rolls out in his service truck, stocked up like a mobile parts department and smelling vaguely of grease, brake cleaner, and yesterday’s beef jerky. At the first stop, he checks in with the customer—who, of course, greets him with, “Hey man, it was making this weird noise but now it’s not. Go figure.” Classic.
8:30 AM – The Pre-Game Ritual
Mike verifies the VIN, license plate, and fleet number (we don’t touch a single bolt until we’re sure it’s the right truck—no mystery repairs here). He snaps photos of everything: VIN, mileage, all four corners. It’s like the truck’s own glamour shoot. Only less glamorous. Especially with that cracked bumper and creative duct tape application.
9:00 AM – Diagnostics: Trust, But Verify
Before diving in, Mike inspects the vehicle from top to bottom. No one wants to replace brake pads on a truck that’s about to throw a piston through the hood. That’s just bad business—and very bad for your day. Mike finds a few surprises (there always are): a tire wearing like it owes someone money, a mystery fluid leak, and a fuse box held together with… chewing gum?
10:00 AM – Repair Mode: Activated
With a green light from the customer, Mike gets to work. He’s part technician, part magician, and part contortionist—because no matter the size of the truck, the bolt you need to reach is always behind some sort of industrial origami.
12:00 PM – Lunch: Fuel for Man and Machine
Lunch break is sacred. Today it’s a gas station burrito and an iced coffee that tastes suspiciously like motor oil. He doesn’t care. He’s survived worse.
1:00 PM – The Afternoon Gauntlet
Two more stops. One is a PM inspection on a box truck that smells like onions for reasons no one wants to know. The other involves diagnosing a no-start issue, which turns out to be a battery cable looser than Monday motivation.
Mike documents it all on his iPad: before, during, and after photos, recommendations, and proof that he did in fact clean up the mess. Tools put away. Fingerprints wiped. Not a smudge left behind.
4:45 PM – Truck Clean-Up and Tomorrow’s Load-Out
Back at the shop, Mike unloads the day’s trash, reloads supplies, and wrestles with the roll of shop towels that absolutely refuses to cooperate. He reviews his jobs, uploads the documentation, and gets ready to do it all again tomorrow.
5:00 PM – Clock Out: Dirty Hands, Clear Conscience
Another day done. Trucks fixed. Customers happy. One more step toward keeping the wheels of business turning—literally. Mike heads home, proud, exhausted, and already wondering what tomorrow’s “mystery smell” will be.
